Uncouth and Without Form
John Rae
Uncouth and Without Form is a 2020 jazz album by Edinburgh-born, Wellington-based composer and drummer John Rae. The project explores Rae's Scottish roots by blending original jazz compositions with traditional melodies. The title is inspired by a quote from Duke Ellington, who once addressed critics describing his music as "uncouth and without form" by comparing it to the culturally significant but often misunderstood nature of Scottish bagpipe music. A fusion of folk and jazz, featuring traditional Scottish tunes like "Ye Banks and Braes" (RNZ jazz track of the year) and "Mo rùn geal òg" alongside original pieces.
