The album was recorded and released in 2012 and is a blend of avant-garde jazz and classical influence, featuring a unique lineup of jazz brass and a string quartet. The ensemble is known for its residency at Meow in Wellington, where they developed the material for this recording. The group was founded and led by drummer and composer John Rae, featuring prominent New Zealand musicians such as bassist Pat Bleakley and saxophonist Dan Yeabsley. While the band's name, "The Troubles," evokes the historical conflict in Northern Ireland, the album "Twenty Twelve" primarily focuses on original compositions by John Rae.

Personnel: John Rae: Leader, composer, and drummer. Patrick Bleakley: Double bass. Dan Yeabsley: Saxophones (alto/baritone) and clarinet. Jake Baxendale: Saxophones. Lex French: Trumpet. Tristan Carter: Violin. Hannah Fraser: Violin. Andrew Filmer: Viola. Charles Davenport: Cello. TH012.
