The John Rae Collective was a seminal Scottish jazz sextet formed in the late 1980s by drummer and composer John Rae. The group is best known for its era-defining influence on the Scottish jazz scene. The ensemble served as a critical breeding ground for musicians who became prominent leaders in the UK jazz world. The Collective challenged the dominance of established figures like Tommy Smith in the late 1980s. Tragically, the record company releasing the album fell into liquidation on the day of release and subsequently denied the world a recording that captured the band at the peak of its powers. Featuring compositions by the group's saxophonist Phil Bancroft as well as guitarist Kevin Mackenzie.
Personnel: John Rae (Leader/Drums) Brian Kellock (Piano) Phil Bancroft (Saxophone) Colin Steele (Trumpet) Kevin Mackenzie (Guitar) Kenny Ellis (Bass)
