John Rae's Big Feet, unveiled at the 2003 Islay Jazz Festival in Scotland, was an innovative fusion of jazz and traditional Scottish music. Rae, a drummer and composer, brought together some of Scotland’s finest jazz and traditional musicians along with the Isle of Islay Pipe Band to perform a unique suite composed specifically for this ensemble. The piece was characterized by its dynamic shifts from structured thematic development to spontaneous, uninhibited improvisation, capturing the audience’s excitement at its premiere in Port Ellen, where a packed crowd cheered enthusiastically.

The Glasgow Herald highlighted Rae’s impact on Scottish music, suggesting that his work might pave a new path for the nation's musical expression, one that could inspire generations to come, "marching, skipping and jiving through the next century." Rae's Big Feet not only celebrated the spirit of Scottish music but also pushed its boundaries, blending traditional sounds with the unpredictable energy of jazz
